Altho camp plan may not conform to
actual camp, please note this year we hope to have a better layout that is
more camp & visitor friendly. This means parking & staging will hopefully be
more strategically implemented so there is a central area for smoozing &
satellite areas for other necessities like kitchen & showers & more. Stay
tuned!

AOXOMOXOA Camp Clean Up
General Camp Clean Up and Organizational Plans
conforms w/ previous years:
Don’t let it touch the ground.
No shells from peanuts, et al. Don’t bring them if they
are in shells!
Check BM website:
http://earthguardians.burningman.com/clean_files/travel_environment.gif
for hints on what to bring & what not to bring (like
no whole chicken, just the meat, leave unnecessary packaging @ home to
recycle there, then, not later @ camp).
Leave the little stuff @ home, it will just blow away.
This includes paper & plastic cups & more.
1. Shower/Kitchen Clean-up: We will again have
a gray water collection for our solar shower. Only
environmentally friendly soaps and shampoos will be used. We will
have a dishwashing station set up and we reuse gray water in certain stages
of dish washing. All of our campers will bring reusable dishes, place
settings, and cups. Our compost is separated and dried. We’ll again have a
recycle center set up, lots of trash cans (for sorting) plenty of extra
large black trash bags; we are emphasizing beer to be brought in aluminum
cans rather than glass. We are emphasizing water to be brought in reusable
containers rather than recyclable plastic. FRED AND LORY, the designated LNT
experts of our camp, will regularly scour the camp to make sure no food nor
cup nor dish is left unattended. In lieu of Lory & Fred, all campmates will
be responsible for monitoring their own & any other campmates or guests’
potential MOOP!
2. Recycle Center: we recycle by separating
plastic, glass, paper, & finally trash. All carried out unless otherwise
used by fellow Black Rock City denizens.
3. Dead Sea Pond: Small enough to be
filled with only our gray water, large enough to display a solar fountain,
rocks, cactus and toys (that don’t blow in the wind).
4. Lighting: solar lights placed
conspicuously to mark our camp, Christmas lights run off the generator.
Everyone carries flashlights and wears lights at night to be seen.
5. Gifting: Any gifts and trinkets
given away will have use! Will not blow in the wind! We won’t be passing out
paper items! No boas or glitter in camp!
As
always, we have an ingrained leave no trace ethic. Our commitment to
educating new burners who likely will join our came to leave @ home plastic
cups, plates, utensils, etc (usu. non-recyclable and light, easily airborne
during the periodic windstorms, even the persistent gusting, common @ Black
Rock Desert).
Also,
interlopers who nudge into perimeter space will be held to a high standard
In
addition, we plan to bring less to haul out.
Also,
we will collect and haul out detritus from the gray water after we
accumulate from the solar shower superstructure gray water corral.
Besides our traditional afternoon spent going around the city patrolling the
playa w/ trash bags chasing the inevitable boa 'feathers', we plan to sweep
our camp w/ rakes and eyes for any MOOP we may have missed, or that more
likely blew our way from less conscientious campers.
In addition, I was reminded that we have a recycle
center @ camp, mostly for campmates, but also available for needy recyclers.
Our kitchen recycles and filters gray water.
MORE CLEAN-UP
Traditionally, our campmates spend Sunday & Monday
early a.m. cruising the camp and outreaches searching down the windblown and
misplaced garbage items. We will take our art car and bikes out for a city
wide clean up, attempting to catch the garbage that is blowing to parts
unknown, before it actually gets to parts unknown.
Early Monday is our camp clean up time. Each year our
30+ members have gallantly contributed to getting every last little thing
off of the playa and into our vans. After that, we start spiraling out and
clean up abandoned camps in our vicinity. Some of us stay longer than
others. Always there is clean up beyond our immediate camp. Myself, Lory
Osterhuber, and my partner, Fred Smith, are designated as LNT experts.
Fred and I are committed to keeping our camp clean, our campmates
conscientious, and our city clear of matter that is out of place. We love
the desert, we love Black Rock City, and we want the Burning Man community
experiment to be able to continue.
We always have on hand: plenty of trash bags, shovels,
rakes, buckets, tie downs (rope, et al.), brooms, sledge hammers, hammers,
and assorted other tools. We carry but have never had to use fire
extinguishers.
Thank you all for your efforts!
Love and Peace, Lory Osterhuber
